Department of Pharmacognosy

Head of the Department:
Department Overview:

Pharmacognosy is the study of drugs derived from natural sources. It forms an important part of pharmaceutical research and development. Pharmacognosy involves the identification, physicochemical characterization, cultivation, extraction, preparation, quality control, and biological assessment of drugs. A plant leaf, flower, root, animal or plant extract may be used to isolate the bioactive chemical. Traditionally, pharmacognosy was recognized as a vital part of drug development processes and pharmacy education; however,  the advent of new miracle drugs that can be synthesized in the laboratory led to a decline in its practice.

Department Mission:

The mission of the Department of Pharmacognosy is to advance the study and understanding of natural products derived from plants, animals, and microorganisms for the development of therapeutic agents and health products. By fostering an interdisciplinary approach, the department aims to contribute to the discovery, identification, and sustainable use of bioactive compounds that promote human health and well-being. Through research, education, and collaboration, the department seeks to train future scientists, pharmacists, and healthcare professionals with a strong foundation in natural product science, while emphasizing ethical, sustainable practices and innovation in pharmaceutical development.

Department Vision:

The Department of Pharmacognosy envisions becoming a leading center of excellence in the discovery, development, and sustainable utilization of natural products for the advancement of health and well-being. By fostering innovative research, cultivating a deep understanding of medicinal plants, and integrating traditional knowledge with modern scientific approaches, the department aims to contribute to the global healthcare landscape. It is committed to educating and empowering future pharmacists, researchers, and healthcare professionals, promoting ethical practices, and supporting environmental stewardship in the exploration and use of natural resources.
